שטפן שורש נולד בארפורט שבגרמניה בשנת 1966. הוא למד באוניברסיטאות בלייפציג,
בירושלים ובברלין. את עבודת הדוקטור שלו הוא כתב בלייפציג על לשון נקייה במקרא. בשנים 1999–2009 היה מרצה לעברית בבית הספר הגבוה הכנסייתי ללימודים תאולוגיים על שם בת־אל בְּבילפלד ושם כתב עבודת דוקטור נוספת על הקריאה השומרונית בתורה כעדת נוסח של התורה. בשנים 2009–2023 שימש פרופסור למקרא בפקולטה לתאולוגיה באוניברסיטת האלה־ויטנברג על שם מרטין לותר, ומאז 2023 הוא פרופסור למקרא באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים.
